Extended papers from FARU 2017 Proceedings in disaster management and resilience areas will be invited to publish in a Special Issue of International Journal of Disaster Resilience in the Built Environment" - in early 2018. This is a SCOPUS ranked journal and Editor of the Journal is Professor Dilanthi Amarathunge of University of Huddersfield, UK. In addition, the best paper award and two other highly-commended awards will be given to papers in this area at the conference.

Faculty of Architecture Research Unit (FARU) of University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and National Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka are jointly organizing the 10th International research conference on architecture/built environments in Colombo between 08th – 10th December 2017. The conference will provide a forum for researchers, academics, practitioners and students in the areas of architecture, built environment, planning, building economics and integrated design.
Authors are invited to submit abstracts written in English within 300 words in areas related to the theme and sub themes of the conference.
Conference host
Faculty of Architecture Research Unit (FARU) of University of Moratuwa will be the main organizer of the conference. National Science Foundation of the Ministry of Science and Technology will be the co-organizer of the conference.
Conference Theme
Architecture (and built environment) provides refuge from the external environments but has a multitude of needs and functions to perform and care. The domain of architecture is thus diverse and includes responses to various needs underlining the essential role research has for the furtherance of and sharing knowledge for the practice and discipline. The impact of architecture as a social product, environmental, contextual and technological entity and economic discipline on quality of life leads to policy relevance, practice and further research. While to a certain extent, these concerns are independent domains of knowledge, they interact together in the design process and performance during occupancy and usage. Architecture thus involves team work and multi-disciplinary (and inter disciplinary) approach for innovation – hence the need to understand the art and science of creating meaningful built environments.

FARU 2017 highlights the significance of architecture (built environment) in caring environmental, physical, energy, socio-cultural, and economic concerns and needs, and thus the quality of life of people. Annual 10th International Conference of FARU in 2017 invites contributions on research and intellectual developments as well as on innovative case studies in the following areas:

| Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom Sue Roaf is Professor of Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. Having spent ten years in Iran and Iraq she completed academic studies on the windcatchers of Yazd, nomadic architecture in Iran, and the ancient water systems, technologies and archaeology of Iraq. She has an international reputation for work on thermal comfort, photovoltaics, passive building design, ecohousing, and the education of architects. She is the author of a number of books on Benchmarks for Sustainable Buildings, Adapting Buildings and Cities for Climate Change and Ecohouse Design. Professor Roaf Chaired the 2nd International Congress on Solar Cities in Oxford 2006. She is an internationally recognised speaker on issues of the environment and buildings and gave the Keynote talks at the ARBS2010 in Sydney and the ASHRAE 2009 Conferences, being the premier HVAC conferences in South East Asia and the USA respectively. For more detail.. | Faculty of Construction and Environment, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Professor Geoffrey Shen is the Chair Professor of Construction Management and Associate Dean of Faculty of Construction and Environment of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has a proven record of accomplishment of accomplishment of academic and research leadership in construction management with special interest in sustainable construction supported by information and communication technologies. He has led a large number of research projects with total funding over HK$35 million, and has authored more than 200 papers in peer-reviewed academic journals. He is member of the editorial boards of several leading journals, and has been invited to give keynote presentations in a number of international conferences. He has served the built environment panel of the Research Assessment Exercise in Hong Kong in 2006, and he is the immediate past Chair of the Global Leadership Forum in Construction Engineering and Management Programs. | University of New South Wales, Australia Dr Katherine Moline is an artist, designer and academic. She is the Associate Dean Research Training in the Faculty of Art & Design, University of New South Wales, Sydney. Katherine’s research explores the cross-overs between artistic avant-gardes and contemporary experimental design, with a current focus on the social imaginaries of data emerging in recombinations of art, science and design. Recent research projects she has led include The Selfie and Social Activism at UNSW Art & Design, Sydney (2016); and the exhibitions Climactic: Post Normal Design at Miller Gallery, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh (2016); Experimental Thinking: Design Practices at Griffith University Gallery, Brisbane (2015); Experimental Practice: Provocations in and Out of Design at RMIT Design Hub, Melbourne (2015); and Feral Experimental at UNSW Galleries, Sydney (2014). Her research has been widely published in book chapters, academic journals, conference proceedings, and exhibition catalogues. She has served on editorial boards and peer-review committees for a number of journals including Material Thinking and Radical Designist. For more detail.. | National Institute of Design, India Prof. Arun Gupta has taught various filmmaking courses (including Direction, Scriptwriting, Film Language and Film Appreciation) for more than two decades, at NID and elsewhere. He has a Post- Graduate Diploma in Film Direction from Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, India and a BA in English Literature from the University of Delhi, India. He has had a long stint in Indian television before joining full-time teaching at NID. He has served as Jury in several International Film Festivals, runs a biennial Asian Short & Documentary Film Festival at NID called "Alpavirama" and has been writing a book on Hindi Film Villains.
